Kasi Viswanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thirukanji Village near Villianur Town in Union Territory of Puducherry, India. Presiding Deity is called as Kasi Viswanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi. This Temple is situated on the Northern Bank of the Varaha Nadhi River.

Legends

Thiru Kasi:

This place is considered equivalent to Kasi. Hence it is called as Thiru Kasi and later got corrupted to Thirukanji.

People worshipped Lord Shiva here:

It is believed that Lord Suryan and Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva of this Temple.

The Temple

The Temple is having 3 tiered Rajagopuram facing east. Presiding Deity is called as Kasi Viswanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi. Nandhi and Dwajasthambam are found facing the sanctum. Athma Lingam is situated on the Kalyana Mandapam. There is also a shrine for Annapoorani in the Temple premises. A Shiva lingam little below the ground level immersed in water can be found in the Temple.

The Temple remains open from 06.00 am to 11.00 am and 05.00 pm to 07.00 pm.

Festivals

Sankatahara Chathurthi, Pradosham, Ammavasai, Pournami and all Shiva related festivals are celebrated here with much fanfare. Masi Magam is celebrated here in grand manner.

The Temple is located at about 2.5 Kms from Uruvaiyar Bus Stop, 3 Kms from Villianur Bus Stop, 10 Kms from Puducherry Main Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Puducherry Railway Station, 4 Kms from Villianur Railway Station, 33 Kms from Villupuram, 31 Kms from Villupuram Railway Station, 155 Kms from Chennai Airport and 159 Kms from Chennai. The temple is located on the Puducherry-Villupuram road.

Bus facilities are available from both ends. Buses are available for every 10 minutes from Puducherry Main Bus Stand and Villupuram Bus Stand. From Pondicherry, take the Villupuram bound Bus or Villianur Bus and get down at Villianur Bus Stop. Share Autos are available from Villianur Bus Stop to reach this Temple. Nearest Railway Station is located at Villianur and Puducherry. Nearest Airport is located at Puducherry and Chennai.
