Thirukameswarar Temple is
a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Villianur Town in Union
Territory of Puducherry, India. It is popularly known as the Villianur Temple. Presiding
Deity is called as Kameswarar / Mirameeswarar / Narasinganathar / Naduvazhinathar
/ Vaidyanathar / Vilwasenar. Mother is called as Kokilambikai / Kuyilammai /

century CE. The historical name of the temple is Vilwanallur, meaning the good
city of Vilwa trees (Bel).
Thirukameswarar Temple is mentioned in the hymns of the
Tamil scripture called Thevaram. Hence it is considered as Thevara Vaipu
Sthalam. Since Pondicherry is ruled by French, one can clearly witness the
French influence over the temple through their varied traditions. Since 2014, the
temple is undergoing a renovation without archeological supervision which
raises question about eventual loss of historical data. The renovation work is supposed to end in 2017 however
the temple remains open.
