Raja Chozheeswarar temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to
Lord Shiva located at Thirumalairayanpattinam (T.R Pattinam) Commune in
Karaikal District of Union Territory of Puducherry. The Temple is also called
as Abhirami Amman Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Raja Chozheeswarar and
Mother is called as Abhirami Amman. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu
Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple.
History
Karaikal was ruled by Saluva Thirumalai Rayan of
Vijayanagara Kingdom during 15th Century A.D. T.R. Pattinam served
as the headquarters of the areas controlled by him. It is believed that T.R.
Pattinam river was dug by him. Kalamegha Pulavar, a famous Tamil Poet, was the
court poet of this King. This town is believed to be named after the king Thirumalai
Rayan who ruled Thirumalairayanpattinam during ancient days and also the river
named out of that king name Tirumalarajanar River which drains
into the Bay of Bengal a few kilometers north
of the town.
The Temple
This is an east facing Temple with three tiered
Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Raja Chozheeswarar and is facing
east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Mother is called as
Abhirami Amman. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There are shrines
and idols of Vinayaga, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai,
Dakshinamoorthy, 63 Nayanmars and Chandikeswarar in the Temple premises.

The Temple is considered as
Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about
this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 7th Thirumurai in 12th
Patikam in 7th Song.
