Thirilokanathar Temple, Thakkalur, Karaikal, Puducherry

Thirilokanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thakkalur near Thirunallar in Karaikal District of Union Territory of Puducherry, India. Presiding Deity is called as Thirilokanathar and Mother is called as Dharma Samvardhini. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple. The Temple has been renovated by Cholas and Nattukkottai Nagarathars.

The Temple

This is an east facing temple without Rajagopuram. There is an entrance arch with stucco images of Lord Shiva and Parvathy with Rishaba flanked by Lord Murugan and Vinayaga on the top. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found in the outer prakaram facing the sanctum. There is no Dwajastambam. Presiding Deity is called as Thirilokanathar and is facing east. He was called as Swetharanyar as per ancient texts, but it has not been in use now. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. 

Ganesha Durga, Brahma, Dakshinamoorthy and Lingodbhava are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Mother is called as Dharma Samvardhini. She was called as Anandha Valli as per ancient texts, but it has not been in use now. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There are shrines and idols of Bhairavar, Chandran, Vinayagar, Murugan, Viswanathar, Gajalakshmi, Pongu Saneeswarar and Chandikeswarar in the Temple premises. Nataraja Sabha can also be found in the Temple housing the bronze image of Nataraja with his consort Shivagami.

The Temple remains open from 08.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.00 PM to 07.00 PM.
