Sundareswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Tiruvettakkudi in Karaikal Town in Union Territory of Puducherry, India. The Temple is also called as Tirumeniazhagar Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar / Vedamoorthy / Thirumeni Azhagar. Mother is called as Shantha Nayaki / Soundara Nayaki. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar. This is the 166^th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 49^th Sthalam on south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. The last consecration ceremony (Kumbabishekam) took place on 28.05.1999.

Temple Opening Time

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Festivals

Four worship services are offered here and the annual festival concludes with Maasi Magam where the processional images of the temple are taken to the sea. Kadalaadu Vizha is celebrated, since it is believed that Iraivi belongs to fisherman family.

Some of the important festivals celebrated in this temple are-

·        3-day Maasi Magam festival in the Tamil month of Masi,

·        Shivarathri in the Tamil month of Maasi (Feb-Mar),

·        Vinayakar Chaturthi in the Tamil month of Aavani (Aug-Sept), and

·        Thirukarthigai in the Tamil month of Karthikai (Nov-Dec)

·        Pradosham is also observed regularly.

Prayers

Devotees pray for faithful friends, freedom from opponents and conquering ego. Devotees perform special Abhishek to Lord offering vastras. Devotees believe that by worshiping the lord here they would get relief from the adverse effects of the nine planets (Navagraham). Also, separated couples can pray to Goddess Parvathy here for re-union.
