Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Puducherry

Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Puducherry
Immaculate Conception Cathedral or Eglise de Notre Dame de la Conception Immaculate Church is the cathedral mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. It is located in the Union territory of Puducherry. It is also known as "Samba Kovil" which is a phonetic corruption of "Saint Paul’s Kovil" where "Kovil" means church. It is a beautiful place of worship established in year 1686. This cathedral, which bears a strong resemblance to a church in France, was built in 1791 on the ruins of the older church.

Dedicated to St. Peters, it is a church of Capuchins and was first served as a small chapel situated outside the government park. In fact, it was the only surviving structure during the British invasion who aimed at mass destruction of buildings and monuments. Mass services in Tamil and English are conducted. It is one of the oldest tourist sites in the city and was visited by Mother Teresa during her visit to Puducherry. The 300 years old church is also the residence of the bishop.

History
The Jesuit Fathers came to the French colony of Pondicherry as missionaries in 1689. There they bought a very large garden to the west of the French Fort. In the 1692 they, with the financial help of Louis XIVking of France, erected a church which was demolished by the Dutch in the following year. A second Church was quickly built in 1699 but could not last long.

From 1728 to 1736 a large church was built on the site of the present Cathedral. This third church was razed to the ground by the British in 1761 during the Seven Years' War. Erecting in 1765 provisionally (fourth in serial) a functional kind of irregular shaped shed where the Mission Press (official press depot of the archdiocese) is now, since the year 1770 the Fathers were earnest in building the present cathedral on the foundations of the 3rd Church.

On 20 June 1791 the main work was finished and the Church was consecrated by Bishop Champenois. The Bell tower was built later. The choir loft was added in 1905. The Sanctuary was remodeled in the year 1970. The esplanade in front of the Cathedral was remodeled in 1987, to allow people to take part in liturgical ceremonies and special functions held outside. Now the church which stands for around 300 years is also the place where the bishop house is also situated.

The Church
The imposing facade presents paired Doric columns below and ionic above. In front of the church is a statue of Our Lady with the infant Jesus in her arms. The interior design consists of eight-barrel vaults and a central dome pierced with eight circular openings. Unlike the other two main French churches, this is the oldest and not Neo gothic, being built in a Portuguese style in the late 18th century. Like the others, it is beautiful inside and out, and worth visiting to understand the rich Catholic religious heritage the French passed on in Pondicherry.

Dupleix Statue, Puducherry

Dupleix Statue, Puducherry
The Statue of Joseph Francois Dupleix is situated in the beach road and housed in the children’s park. Dupleix was an integral part of Pondicherry’s colonial past. He was the governor of Pondicherry between 1742 and 1754. The 2.88 m tall statue of Dupleix stands at the southern end of the park. Even though Dupleix left Pondicherry in 1754, French recognition of his contribution came only in 1870, with the commissioning of two statues-one in Pondicherry and the other in France. It was first installed on 16 July 1870. In 1979, the statue was moved from its previous location, where Nehru Statue is standing today to the current location at the beach.

Dupleix is represented as a man of commanding stature. In the large nose and massive under jaw, some resemblance may be traced to Oliver Oromwel as commonly represented in his portraits. In the statue, Dupleix wears a Curt dress with bag wig and long riding boots; In his right hand is a plan of Puducherry, his left reposing on the hilt of his sword. Apart from two small stone elephants who stand near to him there is a smaller monument to Victor Schœlcher (1804-1893). This Man was a French slavery abolitionist.

This statue has been constructed over granite columns at Place du République. Restoration of the Dupleix statue was undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) of the government of Puducherry in 2014.

Joseph François Dupleix – Life History

Joseph François Dupleix – Life History
Joseph-François, Marquis Dupleix (1 January 1697 – 10 November 1763) was Governor-General of French India and rival of Robert Clive.
Biography
Dupleix was born in LandreciesFrance. His father, François Dupleix, a wealthy fermier general, wished to bring him up as a merchant, and, in order to distract him from his taste for science, sent him on a voyage to India in 1715 on one of the French East India Company's vessels. He made several voyages to the Americas and India, and in 1720 was named a member of the superior council at Pondicherry. He displayed great business aptitude, and, in addition to his official duties, made large ventures on his own account, and acquired a fortune.
In 1730 he was made superintendent of French affairs in Chandernagore, the town prospered under his administration and grew into great importance. In 1741, he married Jeanne Albert, widow of one of the councilors of the company; Albert was known to the Hindus as Joanna Begum and proved of great help to her husband in his negotiations with the native princes. His reputation procured him in 1742 the appointment of governor general of all French establishments in India. He succeeded Dumas as the French governor of Pondicherry.
His ambition now was to acquire for France vast territories in India, and for this purpose he entered into relations with the native princes, and adopted a style of oriental splendour in his dress and surroundings. He built an army of native troops, called sepoys, who were trained as infantrymen men in his service also included the famous Hyder Ali of Mysore. The British took the alarm. But the danger to their settlements and power was partly averted by the bitter mutual jealousy which existed between Dupleix and Bertrand François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, French governor of the Isle of Bourbon (today's La Réunion).
When the city of Madras capitulated to the French following the Battle of Madras in 1746, Dupleix opposed the restoration of the town to the British, thus violating the treaty signed by La Bourdonnais. He then sent an expedition against Fort St David (1747), which was defeated on its march by the Nawab of Arcot, ally of the British. Dupleix succeeded in winning over the Nawab, and again attempted the capture of Fort St David, but did not succeed. A midnight attack on Cuddalore was repulsed at a great loss to Dupleix.
In 1748 Pondicherry was besieged by the British, but in the course of the operations news arrived of the peace concluded between the French and the British at Aix-la-Chapelle. Dupleix next entered into negotiations whose object was the subjugation of southern India. He sent a large body of troops to the aid of the two claimants of the sovereignty of the Carnatic and the Deccan. The British sided with their rivals to check the designs of Dupleix.
In 1750 the Subadar of Deccan gifted the Alamparai Fort to the French. This was a token of his appreciation of the services of Dupleix and the French forces to his services. The fort was later captured by the British and destroyed. From 1751, Dupleix tried to expand French influence in Burma by sending the envoy Sieur de Bruno, and helping militarily the Hmongs in their conflict with the Burmese.
The conflicts between the French and the British in India continued till 1754, when the French government, anxious to settle peace, sent a special commissioner to India with orders to supersede Dupleix and, if necessary, to arrest him. Dupleix was compelled to embark for France on 12 October 1754. Jeanne Albert died in 1756. Having invested his private fortune in the implementation of his public policies, Dupleix found himself ruined. The government refused to support him, and he died in obscurity and want on 10 November 1763.
Commemoration
A number of things were named in his honour:
·        A square, road and metro station in the 15th arrondissement of Paris are named after him.
·    Four French warships have borne his name (beside two commercial ships)
·        The steam corvette Dupleix (1861–1887), famous for her involvement in the Japanese revolution
