Bharathi Park, Puducherry

Bharathi Park is a government Park located at the heart of White Town Area of Puducherry Town in Union Territory of Puducherry. The Government Park or Bharati Park is in the green centre of the town. The Aayi Mandapam is a famous monument which lies at the center of the Bharati Park. Its lush trees provide ample relief from the scorching sun on a hot summer day. This Park is named after Pondicherry born poet Bharathidasan.

This park is just a street away from the beach and middle of the French quarter. The park features a big play area for the kids. Though not maintained well, still they are usable. The park is famous among the Jogging Community, Children, families and Senior Citizens. The park is the most appreciated public area in the town. The Park area is dotted with ancient sculptures.

There are a number of stately buildings situated around this Park;

1. The Raj Nivas - The residence of the Lt. Governor, formerly the Palace of the French Governor of Puducherry.

2. The Museum - situated opposite the Raj Nivas on St Louis Street, houses an interesting collection of excavated artefacts from the Roman Times and heritage from the French Period.

3. Towards the east, hidden behind a thick wall and huge trees lies the former French bandstand on which the French Army Band used to play. On the southern side are the Puducherry Art Gallery, Hotel Qualithe and the Chamber of Commerce, all built with a street front in colonial style. The UCO bank is surrounded by its own garden premises with a mighty stair which invites you to the interior of a traditional bank.

4. Past the General Hospital on the western side are the Legislative Assembly and the Cercle de Pondichéry. Turning back towards the Raj Nivas on the left is beautiful Villa Aroume, which houses the Ashram Dining Room.

The Park is situated on Pondicherry Bus Stand to JIPMER (Gorimedu) Bus Route. Tourists can get down at GH Bus Stop. The Park is located at a walkable distance from this Bus Stop. Taxis and Autos are also available to reach this Park from any part of Puducherry. Nearest Railway Station is located at Puducherry. Nearest Airport is located at Puducherry and Chennai.
