Sundareswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Uzhavarkarai, an outskirt of Puducherry Town in Union Territory of Puducherry. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar and Mother is called as Meenakshi.

History

Ozhukarai was a thriving town during Chola period. The present Villianur and Pondicherry town were part of this town as per the inscriptions available. The town was called as Kulothunga Chola Nallur during the reign of Kulothunga Chola III.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch on the southern side. The entrance arch has stucco images of Rishabaroodar flanked by Nandis and Bhootaganas. Nandi, Dhwaja Sthambam and Balipeedam can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Antrala and Maha Mandapam.

Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar and is facing towards east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar Shrine can be seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Meenkashi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine.

Her shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum in Maha Mandapam. There is a shrine for Agastheeswarar in the temple premises. It is said that the Linga was established by Sage Agastya. There are shrines for Vinayaga, Murugan, Navagrahas and Poraiyathamman in the temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni tree.

The temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 10.00 AM and 05.30 PM to 09.00 PM.

Festivals

Thirukalyanam, Shivaratri and other Shiva related festivals are celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.

The Temple is located at about 700 meters from Mettupalayam Bus Stop, 6 Kms from Osudu Lake, 6 Kms from Puducherry Main Bus Stand, 6.5 Kms from Puducherry Railway Station, 6.5 Kms from Puducherry Airport and 145 Kms from Chennai Airport. The Temple is situated on Pondicherry Bus Stand to Vazhudavur / Pathukannu Bus Route. Tourists can get down at Mettupalayam Bus Stop. The Temple is located at a walkable distance from this Bus Stop.

PRTC Bus 12 A is plying between Pondicherry Bus Stand to Pathukannu will stop at Mettupalayam Bus Stop. All the other private buses running in this route also stops here. Tempos from Muruga Theatre Signal also takes you to this Bus Stop. Taxis and Autos are also available to reach this temple from any part of Puducherry. Nearest Railway Station is located at Puducherry. Nearest Airport is located at Puducherry and Chennai.
