Bheemeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Omandhur near Tindivanam Town in Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Bheemeswarar and Mother is called as Balambigai / Ksheerambikai. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old.

History

Siru Panattru Padai, forming part of the Sangam literatures of Tamil, mentions this place as part of the Oyma Nadu region ruled by Nalliya Kodan known for his charitable traits. This region was around the present Tindivanam. As per the inscriptions, this temple was built during Chola Emperor Rajaraja-I, period in 11th Century. Renovations were carried out during Vijayanagara Nayak period. There were inscriptions belonged to 15^th to 16^th century found on Kumudam. One stone inscription of Rajaraja Chola period mentions this place as Ovvur.

In another inscription of the13th century belonging to Raja Narayana Sambuvarayar, the place is noted as Oimanattu Ogandur. The name of the place began from Ovvur, moved to Ogandur and now stands with Omandur. Ramaswamy Reddy was born in Omandur, was the Chief Minister of Madras in 1947 and in his name a super speciality hospital exists in Chennai. During 1954, Omandur Ramaswamy Reddy had done renovations and conducted Kumbabhishekam.

Temple Opening Time

The Temple remains open from 06.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and from 04.30 p.m. to 08.00 p.m. Mostly evening timings is unpredictable. Devotees are advised to contact before visiting, during evening hours.

Festivals

Besides monthly Pradosha pujas, the temple celebrates Maha Shivrathri in February-March.

The Temple is considered as Parihara Sthalam for Wealth, Child Boon and Food. Devotees worship Lord Shiva here to become rich, to get blessed with child and to get cure from all kind of food related problems. For relief from the adverse aspects of planets and serpent planets in particular, devotees light ghee lamps dedicated to the presiding deity Realizing their wishes, devotees perform abishek to Lord and mother and offer vastras.

Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva here:

During their exile, the Pandavas came to a place called Minnur Kadu. Hungry Dharmaputra asked his brother Bheema to get some food for all. Bheema could not find food but a Shiva Linga and begged for food. Lord arranged milk for them. The brothers prayed to Lord that all people should be blessed with food as he graced them. As Lord was worshipped by Bheema, He came to be praised as Bheemeswarar in this temple. It is strongly believed that those worshipping Lord Bheemeswarar would never have to suffer from hunger.

Bheemeswarar:

According to another version of the story, Lord was worshipped by Bheema one of the Ekadasa Rudras and Bheemanatha the security in Mount Kailash on the southwest direction, hence praised as Bheemeswarar.

Palambigai:

As Ambika offered milk to Bheema and his brothers to quench their hunger, she is praised as Palambigai – Paal in Tamil means milk. Minnur forest area where the Pandavas stayed then is the present Tindivanam.

Omandur:

Ohm is the first mantra of our scriptures praised as Pranava Mantra. Andhur means the musical sound of the anklet. Pleased with the penance of Maharshis, Lord performed his Anandha dance (Anandha Thandavam). The melodious sound of his anklet was first heard in this place – Ohm Andhur – Omandur.

The temple is facing west with an entrance arch with mandapam on south. Balipeedam and Nandi can be found in a mandapam on the west side. Nandi is worshipping Lord through the window. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Antarala, Arthamandapam and a Mukamandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Bheemeswarar and is facing west. Lord is also praised as Tiruvarul Easwara Azhwar, Tiruveemeessaram Udaya Nayanar and Thava Padara Nayanar.

He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Linga. He is about 6 feet high, housed in a round Avudaiyar. The Sanctum is on Pathabandha adhistana with three face Kumudam. Sanctum is having a three-tiered nagara Vimana. Vimana is about 30 feet high. Vinayaga, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum wall. Lord Ganapathi graces in his dancing posture outside south of the sanctum sanctorum on a lotus shaped peeta.

Lord Dakshinamurthy appears gracefully with his disciples – Sanakathi saints. Lord Vishnu on the east, Lord Brahma and Mother Durga on the north bless the devotees from their shrines. There are shrines for Chandran Suryan, Adalvallan and Utsavars in the Mandapam. Mother is called as Balambigai / Ksheerambikai. She is housed in a separate east facing shrine.

There is a unique shrine for Rajarajeswari in the Temple premises. Yoga Rajeshwari a rare idol is in this temple. Goddess Rajeshwari is in yoga posture. There are shrines for Vara Siddhi Vinayaga, Bhairava, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Nagas, Navagrahas and Chandikeswarar in the outer courtyard. Sthala Vriksham is Vilva tree. There is a Temple for Lord Vaikunda Perumal near Bheemeswarar Temple. He is about 10 feet tall.
