Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Thoravi near Panayapuram in Vikravandi Taluk in Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu, India. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Brihan Nayagi / Periyanayaki. This Temple is situated close to Panayapuram Panangatteswarar Temple, a Devara Padal Petra Sthalam.

History

The Temple is believed to be around 1300 years old built by Pallavas and was later extensively renovated by Cholas. This Village was part of Panaiyur Nadu under Rajendra Chola Valanaadu during Chola period. The village was gifted to Shaivite ascetics (Thuravi) by Chola Kings. Hence, the village called as Thuraviyur in ancient times. Now, got corrupted to Thoravi. Local villagers still remember the visit of Kanchi Maha Periyava to this temple while he went to Pagandai for learning Vedas from Villupuram. This temple is currently reconstructed by Enandhinatha Nayanar Trust, Puducherry.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with an entrance on the southern side. The temple is under construction. The older temple was completely lost except the idols. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum and Ardha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. The Sanctum and Ardha Mandapam are open to sky as the construction is not yet completed.

Mother is called as Brihan Nayagi / Periyanayaki. The original idol was lost, and a new idol is kept under balalaya in the temple premises. It is said that the new idol is sourced from Kanyakumari. Nandi, Murugan with his peacock vehicle and Mother idol are kept in a thatched roof near the entrance of the temple.

Sculpture of Lord Vinayaga carved on a stone tablet can be seen on the left side at the entrance of the thatched shed. Another Sculpture of Lord Murugan carved on a stone tablet can be seen on the right side at the entrance of the thatched shed. Both these sculptures are dated to 7^th century CE. There is a Naga idol kept near to the Murugan sculpture. Locals consider this Idol as Ragu Ketu and worship it for relief from Ragu Ketu Dosha.

Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Nellikkuppam Town in Panruti Taluk in Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Akhilandeshwari. The Temple was believed to be built by Pallavas and is about 1400 years old.

There are three temples in the area around Nellikkuppam that denote Kailasam, Shivalogam and Bhoologam, the three places where Lord Shiva is worshipped. They are;

·        Sivalokanathar Temple, Vellappakkam (Shivalogam)

History

The Temple was believed to be built by Pallavas and is about 1400 years old. The temple has received royal patronage from Cholas, Nayaks, Kadavas and Vijayanagara Kings. The temple was constructed during the reign of Mahendravarma Pallava I (600-630 CE). It is said that Mahendravarma Pallava started building Shiva Temples over Jain Shrines when he was converted to Shaivism from Jainism by the efforts of Thirunavukkarasar (Appar). This Temple is considered one among those converted shrines.

During the desilting of the temple tank in recent times, people had found an ancient Jain Theerthangar statue dating back to 5^th Century AD. The Temple authorities installed the statue in the temple premises. The Temple received patronage from Kundavai Nachiyar, elder sister of Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I. An inscription on the lintel of the sanctum attests this fact. There is an inscription dated to Chola King Vikrama Chola (1118 – 1135 CE) talks about the renovation done by Chola Emperor Rajendra Chola I.

The temple was called as Kailsamudaiya Rajendra Chozheswaram and the place was called as Rajaraja Valanattu Cholavalli Nallur in the inscriptions available in this temple. Mandapams, Veera Anjaneya Shrine and the walls were built during Nayak Period. There is an inscription dated to 17^th Century CE mentions about the temple renovations carried out by Irandaairam Mudaligal. The Temple contains ten Chola era inscriptions, one Nayakkar period inscriptions and rest three inscriptions are of recent origin.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east, but the temple entrance is from the southern side as the eastern entrance is not in use due to the encroachment by the locals. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Artha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamoorthy (without the Banyan tree behind him), Vishnu Durga with a Prayoga Chakra (bison head at her feet is missing), Vishnu, Vinayaga and Brahma are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

Idols of Lord Murugan and Vinayaga can be found at the entrance of the sanctum. Mother is called as Akhilandeshwari. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her idol is around 6 feet tall. Her shrine is situated to left side of the sanctum. There is a shrine for Lord Vinayaga in the south west corner of the Temple premises. There is a small shrine in the form of Maadakoil can be found next to the Vinayaga Shrine. It might have housed a Lingam in ancient times. Now, no deity is enshrined in this shrine.

There is a shrine for Lord Murugan in the temple premises. This shrine houses Baladhandayuthapani facing south and Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai facing east. Sthala Vriksham, Vanni tree is located near to Murugan Shrine. There is a small Lingam beneath this Tree. There are shrines for Veera Anjaneya, Bhairavar, Kala Bhairavar, Suryan, Vishnu, Navagrahas, Veerabhadra, Chandikeswarar, Ayyanar with his consorts Poorna & Pushkala and Jyeshta Devi with Maanthi & Kuligai in the Temple premises.

Moolanathaswamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Bahour Commune in Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It is situated in the heart of Bahour Town. Presiding Deity is called as Moolanatha Swamy / Thiru Moolasthanam Udaiyar and Mother is called as Vedhambigai. The Temple was believed to be built during 6^th – 7^th Century A.D. by Pallavas and later got converted to granite construction during Chola Period. This Temple is one of the protected monuments in Puducherry declared by Archaeological Survey of India and is maintained by ASI.

Legends

Once, Chola King Parantaka Chola I wife was suffering from skin disease. She prayed to Moolanathar for relief from skin disease. Lord Moolanathar appeared in her dreams and instructed her to install and Thirushobanamudaiyar on the left side of the sanctum. Further, Lord Shiva instructed her to worship Thirushobanamudaiyar continuously to get rid of the disease. She followed the instruction without fail. As a result, she got relieved from the disease. Parantaka Chola 1 converted the brick structure to granite structure as a gratitude on insistence of the queen.
